  • Safety First: Rohit Sharma Discusses Threat Warnings and Hotel Lockdown Before Ind‑Pak T20

Rohit Sharma shared some intriguing details from the build-up to India vs Pakistan match in the T20 World Cup

Retired from two of the three formats, Rohit Sharma has now got the time to sit back, relax, and look back at some of his recent achievements in international cricket. Though the ODI World Cup dream still remains unfulfilled for Rohit, he did manage to lead the national team to the T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 titles recently. These events also included some gruelling contests against Pakistan, India’s arch-rivals

During an interview on JioHotstar, Rohit shared some intriguing details from India’s T20 World Cup campaign, especially as the team was preparing for the match against Pakistan.

“Before the India vs Pakistan match, we were told there was a threat – something was going on. So, two days before the game, we weren’t allowed to step out of the hotel. The atmosphere started building from there,” Rohit said on JioHotstar.

Though Indian captains often dub matches against Pakistan as ‘just another contest’, Rohit admitted that the statement isn’t really true.

“We were ordering food in, and the hotel was so packed you could barely walk. Fans, media – everyone was there. That’s when you realise this isn’t just another match – something special is about to happen. As soon as we got near the stadium, it already felt like a celebration – Indian fans, Pakistani fans, all dancing and enjoying themselves,” he added.

“I’ve played so many India-Pakistan games now – I’ve lost count – but that pre-match energy, that feeling… It’s always something else. Nothing compares to it,” he further said.

In the T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan, it was Rishabh Pant who scored 42 off 31 balls in an innings that saw the Indian team being dismissed for 119 in 19 overs.

“We just wanted Rishabh to be Rishabh – do all the things he does best, unsettle the bowlers, play freely. And he did that perfectly. His innings was around 42, and on that pitch, that’s as good as scoring 70.”

In the match, Jasprit Bumrah turned out to be the team’s saviour again, with three wickets to his name, helping the team secure a 6-run win.

“With Bumrah, you’ve got to be proactive in how you use him. He’s a wicket-taker, and at the same time, he’s not going to leak runs. So, how do you balance that, especially when the opposition is chasing at a run-a-ball? Arshdeep has been phenomenal too,” said Rohit Sharma.

“Over the last two years, there’s a reason he’s become India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is – he’s a really smart bowler. So, with both of them, my focus was on how to use their remaining overs strategically,” he added.

  • Washington’s $800M Defense of Israel Depletes Key Missile Shield System

The THAAD deployment to Israel came with challenges as supporting allies in conflict zones would mean using resources that could affect military readiness and future deployment.

The United States used up a total of 15 to 20 per cent of the country’s advanced anti-missile system or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) to bolster the defence against Iran’s aerial strikes during the 12-day conflict in which Israel and the US struck nuclear facilities.

According to Military Watch Magazine, an estimate of 60-80 interceptors were utilised during the conflict. A single launch of a THAAD interceptor costs between $12-15 million, so the entire cost of these interceptors sits between $810 million to $1.215 billion. This figure dwarfs the cost of Iran’s missile barrages. This asymmetric cost of defence versus offence is not sustainable in the long term or multi-front conflicts.

Per the Wall Street Journal, the US had restocked the THAAD system set up in Israel in 2024.

Iran had launched a barrage of missiles on cities across Israel in response to attacks on its nuclear and military facilities. They included models such as Ghadr, Emad, Kheibar Shekan, and the Fattah-1 hypersonic missile, which is hard to intercept as it travels at up to Mach 15.

The THAAD deployment to Israel came with challenges as supporting allies in conflict zones would mean using resources that could affect military readiness and future deployment.

The THAAD system was designed to counter the expanding missile capabilities of nations like North Korea and Iran as they were pursuing medium and intermediate range ballistic missiles capable of delivering conventional or nuclear warheads.

Moreover, the United States produces only about 50-60 THAAD interceptors annually, which means it could take years to replenish what it just expended in 11 days.

The war between Israel and Iran came to an end after US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that a “complete and total ceasefire” had been reached by both the parties. In the end, the US-Israel campaign has managed to contain, not defeat, Iran. Nuclear sites were hit. Military leadership was shaken. But Iran’s regime, and its nuclear ambition, remain intact.

  • Mauritius Seizes £1.6 Million Drug Haul, Six-Year-Old Among Detainees

The six-year-old was unaware of the contents of his bags. He was flown back to the UK on Wednesday and is staying with his father.

A six-year-old British boy was detained in Mauritius after customs officials found 14 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside his suitcase. According to The Telegraph, the child was detained alongside seven other people at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport on Sunday. The group was reportedly carrying more than 161 kilograms of cannabis, worth 1.6 million pounds (approximately Rs 18.8 crore), hidden in the luggage. Seven of the suspects were British, including the boy whose luggage contained 24 packages of drugs wrapped in clear cellophane.

The group was stopped at the main international airport in Mauritius as they disembarked from a British Airways flight from Gatwick, per the outlet. The boy’s mother was also arrested and had 17kg hidden in her own bags. The eighth suspect was reported to be a Romanian living in Britain. He was allegedly holding 32 packages of cannabis.

Mauritian authorities described the use of a child to transport drugs as “outrageous and inhumane”, adding, “This is one of the most revolting cases we have encountered in recent years”.

The boy was unaware of the contents of his bags. He was flown back to the UK on Wednesday and is staying with his father.

Authorities discovered 11 Apple AirTags, suggesting links to a drug gang. The drugs cache was found during a joint operation by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and the Anti-Drug & Smuggling Unit (ADSU) at the airport. Officials are treating the group as part of an organised crime network responsible for smuggling drugs from Europe to Mauritius.

The seven suspects, 5 women and 2 men, have been charged with drug trafficking and placed in custody. They appeared at Mahebourg court on the island’s south-eastern coast on Monday, with all remaining in pre-trial detention.

Authorities also carried out a series of targeted raids on hotels containing British nationals after police received a lead that more foreign passengers may have been transporting drugs. No arrests were made at any of the three locations searched.

  • Apple Asks Suppliers to Decarbonise Operations; New Solar, Wind Energy Investments in Europe Announced

Apple said on Tuesday it would make fresh investments to set up solar and wind projects in Europe and called on its suppliers to decarbonize operations related to the production of iPhones and other products.

The company in 2020 had pledged to remove carbon emissions from its entire business, including products and its sprawling supply chain – which spans from Vietnam to Brazil – by 2030.

The iPhone maker will now require its supply partners to report on progress on carbon neutrality goals, specifically, Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reductions, related to the production of Apple products and will audit their progress annually.More than 200 suppliers, representing 70 percent of Apple’s direct manufacturing spending and including Corning, Nitto Denko, SK Hynix, STMicroelectronics, TSMC, and Yuto, have committed to using clean power such as wind or solar for all Apple production, Apple said.

Apple had previously asked suppliers to commit to 100 percent renewable energy for Apple’s production.

“We’re determined to be a ripple in the pond that creates a bigger change,” Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said. Apple has been carbon neutral for its global corporate operations since 2020.Many multinational companies are increasingly looking into global supply chains to reduce their carbon footprint as climate change becomes a bigger focus for investors and regulators.Apple said the European investments are part of a strategy to address about 22 percent of its carbon footprint coming from the electricity customers use to charge their devices.

With the construction of new projects in Europe, the company is aiming to power all Apple devices on the continent with low-carbon electricity, it said.

  • Twitter Files: Firm Reportedly Placed People on ‘Secret’ Blacklists, Actively Limited Visibility, More

Twitter employees built blacklists and actively limited the visibility of entire accounts, according to the second instalment of Elon Musk’s “Twitter Files” that shed light on the company’s hidden practices of the previous management. “A new #TwitterFiles investigation reveals that teams of Twitter employees build blacklists, prevent disfavoured tweets from trending, and actively limit the visibility of entire accounts or even trending topics – all in secret, without informing users,” said the editor of The Free Press Bari Weiss, in a series of tweets.

Twitter once had a mission to give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers. Along the way, barriers nevertheless were erected,” she added.Even though previous management denied reports of a shadow ban, Weiss said Twitter executives and employees used a powerful tool like “Visibility Filtering or VF” to block searches of individual users and to limit the scope of a particular tweet’s discoverability.

Weiss said that “VF” refers to Twitter’s control over user visibility. “It used VF to block searches of individual users; to limit the scope of a particular tweet’s discoverability; to block select users’ posts from ever appearing on the trending page; and from inclusion in hashtag searches.”She said that a select group, which handled up to 200 “cases” a day, decided whether to limit the reach of certain users was the Strategic Response Team – Global Escalation Team.

“But there existed a level beyond official ticketing, beyond the rank-and-file moderators following the company’s policy on paper. That is the Site Integrity Policy, Policy Escalation Support, known as SIP-PES,” she added.

Weiss said that this secret group included Head of Legal, Policy, and Trust Vijaya Gadde, the Global Head of Trust and Safety Yoel Roth, subsequent CEOs Jack Dorsey and Parag Agrawal, and others. This is where the biggest, most politically sensitive decisions got made. Think high follower account, controversial, another Twitter employee told us. For these there would be no ticket or anything,” she said.

Last week, journalist Matt Taibbi in collaboration with Musk published “Twitter Files”, documenting Twitter’s internal communications to disclose links with political actors and with a focus on how the social network blocked stories related to Hunter Biden’s laptop in the lead-up to the 2020 US Presidential election. The published files alleged that the previous Twitter management took steps to suppress reporting regarding Hunter Biden’s laptop ahead of the 2020 US Presidential Election.

According to the Twitter Files published by Taibbi, Twitter deputy general counsel James Baker played a role in the discussion about whether the laptop story fell under Twitter’s “hacked materials” policy. The Bidens have faced scrutiny and criticism from Republicans and others for their alleged misconduct in Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings, which came into the public spotlight following the release of the emails.

On Monday, the White House dismissed the Twitter Files as “full of old news”.

  • Western Digital Reports Network Security Incident After Breach Disrupts Part of Business Operations

The firm also said it is working with law enforcement authorities, following its own investigation with outside security and forensic experts.

Last week, Indian drugmaker Sun Pharmaceutical Industries said it would see a revenue drop in a few of its businesses and incur some expenses due to an “IT security incident” that happened earlier this month.

  • Crypto Reporting Framework Discussed During G20, Decision Taken on Swift Implementation

The G-20 leaders on Saturday decided on swift implementation of the reporting framework for crypto assets, saying a significant number of member nations want information exchange on such non-financial assets to start by 2027.

The Crypto Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) or template is being developed to make sure that such non-financial assets are not used by tax evaders to conceal their unaccounted wealth.

“We call for the swift implementation of the CryptoAsset Reporting Framework (“CARF”) and amendments to the CRS. We ask the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes to identify an appropriate and coordinated timeline to commence exchanges by relevant jurisdictions,” said the G20 Leaders’ declaration, which was adopted by consensus.

The leaders of 20 developing and developed nations have reaffirmed the commitment to continue cooperation towards a globally fair, sustainable and modern international tax system appropriate to the needs of the 21st century. We remain committed to the swift implementation of the two-pillar international tax package. Significant progress has been made on Pillar One including the delivery of a text of a Multilateral Convention (MLC), and work on Amount B (framework for simplified and streamlined application of the arm’s length principle to in-country baseline marketing and distribution activities) as well as the completion of the work on the development of the Subject to Tax Rule (STTR) under Pillar Two,” the declaration said.

Briefing reporters after the summit, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the G20 countries have made substantial progress on the two-pillar solution.

“Work has happened on exchange of information on immovable property transactions between countries. There is a launch of the pilot programme of the South Asia academy for tax and financial crime investigation in collaboration with the OECD,” Sitharaman said.Under the global tax deal, about 140 countries, including India, have agreed to an overhaul of global tax norms to ensure that multinationals pay taxes wherever they operate and at a minimum of 15 percent rate. However, some vexed issues still need to be ironed out before its implementation.

The G20 countries called on the OECD to develop an inclusive framework to swiftly resolve the few pending issues relating to the MLC (multilateral convention) with a view to preparing the MLC for signature in the second half of 2023 and completing the work on Amount B by the end of 2023.We welcome the steps taken by various countries to implement the Global Anti-Base Erosion (GloBE) Rules as a common approach. We recognise the need for coordinated efforts towards capacity building to implement the two-pillar international tax package effectively and, in particular, welcome a plan for additional support and technical assistance for developing countries,” the declaration said.

The G20 countries also took note of the OECD report on ‘Enhancing International Tax Transparency on Real Estate’ and the ‘Global Forum Report on Facilitating the Use of Tax-Treaty-Exchanged Information for Non-Tax Purposes’.

AdvertiseThe OECD has suggested automatic exchange with regard to information on real estate assets among countries and the setting up of digitalised ownership registers accessible to designated relevant government agencies on a real-time basis amid concerns over investments in foreign real estate being used to “shelter undeclared assets”.

The report noted that there has been a significant increase in foreign-owned real estate assets over the past decade, and a lot of funds have been shifted from financial assets to buying foreign real assets.

The Global Forum report also called for countries to adopt a ‘whole-of-government’ approach to address the challenge of illicit financial flows through the sharing of information from tax authorities to non-tax agencies, like financial intelligence units, anti-corruption agencies, customs authorities and public prosecutors.

  • Perplexity Labs Launched With Ability to Generate Spreadsheets, Reports and Create Web Apps

Perplexity Labs, a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature within the Perplexity platform, was introduced on Thursday. The company says the new mode can turn text prompts into full-fledged projects such as reports, spreadsheets, and even simple web apps. Perplexity Labs uses deep web browsing and code execution, to perform complex tasks that were so far beyond the scope of the platform. The new feature comes a month after the San Francisco-based AI firm released the Perplexity Assistant for iOS.

Perplexity Labs Takes Roughly 10 Minutes to Complete a Task

The company says that Perplexity Labs is an enhanced version of Deep Research, and it is currently available to all Perplexity Pro subscribers. The latter generates comprehensive answers to complex queries that typically require multiple searches. The new feature, with the use of several specific tools and by spending more time on the task, can also take actions and execute commands to generate documents and web apps.Perplexity Labs can perform deep web browsing, code execution, chart creation, and image creation, as per the company. The company did not specify if these are agentic tools, and if the new feature supports a multi-agent workflow. It also did not reveal if separate large language models (LLMs) were powering capabilities like image creation and code execution.

The company says that Perplexity Labs can write and execute code to perform tasks such as structuring data, applying formulas, and creating charts and documents. Any documents, code files, charts, and images created during the task are added to a separate Assets tab. Users can view and download these files from there. There’s also an App tab that enables creation of basic dashboards, slideshows, and websites. The description of the feature does make it sound like an agentic capability. Perplexity says it can take 10 minutes or more to complete “self-supervised” tasks. While users can see the chain-of-thought (CoT), it is unclear if they can also pause or interrupt the AI to edit the initial prompt or change the direction of the outcome. The company also shared examples of tasks that Perplexity Labs can handle. These include creating a trading strategy around a specific stock or event, generating a genre-blended film concept with a visual storyboard and screenplay, creating company profiles, or generating comparative data visualisations. The company says that Perplexity Labs is an enhanced version of Deep Research, and it is currently available to all Perplexity Pro subscribers.
